A new study commissioned by ORGATEC reveals that interpersonal relationships are deeply embedded in workplace culture, with one-third of employed Germans having dated a colleague. The research, conducted by YouGov in March 2026 with over 2,000 participants, shows that workplace design plays a significant role in fostering both professional collaboration and personal connections.
Dating and Relationships at Work
The survey indicates that workplace romance is more common than often assumed. Flirting with colleagues is reported by 40.88 per cent of respondents overall, with men more likely to do so at 47.33 per cent compared to women at 34.75 per cent. Around one-third of employed participants (33.11 per cent) have been on a date with someone from their working environment, while just under 29 per cent have developed romantic relationships with colleagues. Notably, 15.86 per cent of respondents met their current or a former partner in a professional setting.
Spaces That Foster Connection
The research identifies specific workplace locations as particularly conducive to personal interactions. Company events and after-work get-togethers top the list at 40.24 per cent, followed by break rooms (27.67 per cent) and traditional workplaces (24.61 per cent). When examining physical design elements, seating areas with corner sofas and lounge furniture (34.67 per cent), outdoor workspaces and terraces (34.44 per cent), and communal tables and shared desks (24.06 per cent) emerge as spaces where employees feel comfortable bonding and interacting socially.
Workplace Design as Business Strategy
Informal meeting spaces demonstrate a strong influence on team dynamics, with 65.65 per cent of respondents stating that lounges, coffee stations and communal areas have a strong or very strong impact on team cohesion and interpersonal relationships. The findings underscore that despite the rise of remote work and hybrid arrangements, the physical workplace remains essential for face-to-face encounters and building workplace culture. This recognition positions workspace design as an increasingly important element of broader business strategy.
ORGATEC Theme and Focus
Recognizing these trends, ORGATEC 2026 will address how workspace design can intentionally facilitate human connection and collaboration. Taking place from 27 to 30 October in Cologne, the trade fair’s theme – From rooms to relationships: designing spaces in an ever-changing world – reflects the growing recognition that workplace design directly influences employee interaction, creativity and sense of belonging. The fair will showcase comprehensive solutions from leading companies, planners, designers and international experts that intelligently combine form, function and use, demonstrating how adaptive workplace solutions can respond to future needs in an era of constant change.
