Koelnmesse has unveiled a significant realignment of its trade fair offerings in the furniture and interior design sectors to adapt to shifting market dynamics. Starting in 2025, two distinct events will cater to specific segments of the interiors industry: imm cologne, targeting the consumer-oriented market, and the newly introduced interior design days cologne (idd cologne), dedicated to premium brands.
The decision stems from a recognition of the rapid transformations within the interior design landscape, including evolving consumer preferences and the diversification of purchase channels. For over 70 years, imm cologne has served as Koelnmesse’s flagship event for the sector, but the increasing divergence in exhibitor and visitor requirements called for a fresh approach.
Tailored formats for distinct industry needs
Launching in October 2025, idd cologne will provide an exclusive platform for premium residential and hospitality brands. The event, held biennially, will feature curated offerings spanning furniture, lighting, and interior design, aimed at professionals such as interior designers, architects, and project planners, alongside high-end design enthusiasts. Gerald Böse, President and CEO of Koelnmesse, highlighted the meticulous collaboration with the industry in shaping this format:
“We see ourselves as a driver of growth for the industry, standing for trust and reliability coupled with inspiration and viable future prospects.”
The first edition of idd cologne is scheduled for October 26-29, 2025, positioning itself as a unique hub for high-caliber brands and innovative designs.
On the other hand, imm cologne will undergo a complete overhaul and reemerge in January 2026 as a streamlined, annual event focused on consumer-driven trends and market-ready products. It will maintain its traditional timing as the kick-off for the interior design year but will condense its schedule to four days. The revamped event will aim to support the furniture trade, including retailers, purchasing associations, and e-commerce platforms, with a focus on accessible, cost-effective participation.
Industry leaders back the new vision
Leo Lübke, President of the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM), emphasized the importance of this dual approach for maintaining Germany’s competitive edge in the European furniture market:
“The two new trade fair concepts that we have co-developed are specifically tailored to the different exhibitor segments and visitor groups. Leading premium manufacturers have already announced their participation.”
Similarly, Markus Meyer, President of the Federal Association of the German Furniture, Kitchen, and Furnishing Trade (BVDM), underscored the role of trade fairs as catalysts for innovation:
“Trade fairs have experienced significant changes in expectations and demands. We firmly believe that the furniture industry needs a strong trade fair and that such events offer excellent opportunities for business and interaction.“
The introduction of these complementary formats — idd cologne and the reimagined imm cologne — demonstrates Koelnmesse’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the interiors industry while fostering innovation and growth in a competitive global market.
