Uzbekistan Airways has secured a landmark fleet expansion deal with Boeing, ordering 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with options for eight additional units. The multi-billion dollar agreement represents the largest single order in the national carrier’s history and signals a major infrastructure investment aimed at transforming Central Asia’s aviation landscape.
The contract, valued at over $8 billion according to initial assessments, will see aircraft deliveries commence in 2031. This strategic expansion directly supports Uzbekistan’s ambitious vision to position Tashkent as the region’s premier international transit hub, creating new pathways for global commerce and tourism flows.
Regional connectivity ambitions
The expanded wide-body fleet will enable Uzbekistan Airways to significantly boost passenger capacity on key routes while enhancing schedule reliability. The airline plans to leverage these aircraft to forge stronger connections between Central Asia and North America, Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region, creating a comprehensive network that could reshape regional trade dynamics.
“With this new contract, we are further strengthening both our airline’s and our nation’s position as a leading aviation hub in Central Asia, while providing our passengers with greater global connectivity. This step reaffirms our ambitions and strategic commitment to sustainable growth,” emphasized Shukhrat Khudaykulov, Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Airways.
Uzbekistan Airways has operated Boeing 787 aircraft successfully for nearly a decade, making it the first 787 operator in Central Asia. The carrier currently utilizes its 787-8 fleet for intercontinental routes, including direct service to New York City, establishing itself as a bridge between regional markets and global destinations.
Economic implications
The agreement aligns with Uzbekistan’s national development program Uzbekistan – 2030 and is expected to generate approximately 35,000 jobs in the United States. The deal represents a significant vote of confidence in Central Asia’s economic potential and growing integration with global markets.
The Boeing 787-9 variant offers enhanced capacity and extended range compared to the airline’s current 787-8 fleet, providing operational flexibility crucial for hub-and-spoke transit models. The aircraft’s fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact also position the carrier favorably as sustainability concerns increasingly influence aviation industry decisions.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in commemorating this agreement during meetings in New York, underscoring the strategic importance of this aviation infrastructure investment. The signing took place alongside discussions with American business representatives and international financial institutions, highlighting the broader economic development context.
This aviation infrastructure expansion offers significant opportunities for international companies in furniture, construction, and interior manufacturing sectors. Enhanced connectivity between Central Asia and global markets will facilitate trade flows, reduce logistics costs, and improve access to the region’s growing consumer base. The increased tourism potential from better air connectivity could also drive demand for hospitality furnishing, construction materials, and interior design services across Uzbekistan and neighboring Central Asian markets.
