Urban format connects premium interior design brands and buyers

Post-show report • idd cologne 2025

idd cologne 2025 celebrated a successful premiere from 26 to 29 October with a new decentralised format that brought interior design directly into the urban environment. The event attracted around 10,000 registered visitors and featured 106 premium brands showcasing their latest products and concepts across 16 locations throughout Cologne’s city center. The innovative approach, which combined brand presentations with more than 70 curated events, established idd cologne as a distinctive platform for the residential, hospitality, and contract business interiors segments while reinforcing Cologne’s position as a leading European design hub.

Urban-only concept redefines brand showcase format

The event’s defining feature was its “urban-only” concept, which replaced traditional trade fair halls with carefully selected venues across Cologne’s city center. Central hubs included Design Post Köln, the listed monument Stoff-Pavillon Moeller, and the machwerkhaus köln – a center for design and urban production. This decentralised approach was supplemented by numerous showrooms, creative locations, flagship stores, and pop-up formats operated by local design businesses. The configuration created a unified city tour through diverse interior design categories while embedding brand presentations directly within Cologne’s architectural and cultural landscape. Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse, stated: “The innovative format brought interior design there where it lives – in the middle of the city, to the people, into the urban environment. The premiere impressively demonstrated the potential to be found in linking trade fairs and metropolitan areas.”

Event programming combines experience with business opportunity

The event’s content strategy emphasized experiential learning and professional networking through diverse programming. Six Urban Design Walks guided visitors through idd cologne’s central venues, enabling direct experience of current design trends. The Architonic Talks series featured design and architecture professionals discussing themes including longevity, emotional spatial impact, brand identity, and material properties. The idd cologne Aperitivo at the Stoff-Pavillon Moeller facilitated casual networking within the design community. Beyond these structured events, showrooms and partner locations hosted live performances, workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and panel discussions. This multi-format approach attracted both trade professionals and design-conscious consumers while maintaining focus on premium residential, hospitality, and contract interiors.

Industry stakeholders affirm new approach

Industry associations and exhibitors offered positive assessments of the debut event. Leo Lübke, President of the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM) and Managing Director of COR, emphasized: “idd cologne has shown what characterises our industry: creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and the courage to embark on new paths. The need for an exchange of ideas, visibility and inspiration is great, and it is precisely here that idd cologne takes its impetus: as a platform combining encounters and design culture in a unique way – close to the market, close to people, close to the future of interiors.”

Christian Haeser, Managing Director of the Federal Association of the German Furniture, Kitchen and Furnishing Trade (BVDM), highlighted the event’s experiential dimension: “The focus on premium brands and high quality interiors in the urban realm had its finger right on the pulse of the times. Especially strong was the proximity and the experienceability – design was not only shown here, but was instead made tangible: spatially, emotionally and authentically. For the trade, idd cologne offered precisely what it needs – inspiration, exchange and a true overview of what is coming.”

Evaluating future direction

Koelnmesse has positioned idd cologne 2025 as a significant development within the Cologne location’s trade fair portfolio for furniture and interior design. The event’s implementation of the urban format reflected industry feedback regarding evolving market expectations and target audience preferences. Organizers indicated that evaluation of visitor, exhibitor, and partner feedback – combined with analysis of market and economic conditions – will inform the future development of idd cologne, suggesting the potential for continued refinement of the decentralised concept.
