Construction has begun on a 1-gigawatt wind power plant in the Kungirot district of Karakalpakstan, an autonomous republic within Uzbekistan. The project, worth $1.2 billion, is being developed in partnership with Chinese company Sany Renewable.
Similar wind power plants are planned for the Beruni and Karauzyak districts, with a capacity of 200 megawatts and a 100-megawatt storage system. The $250 million project in these areas is led by Saudi corporation ACWA Power.
The new wind farms are expected to generate 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of green energy annually, meeting the energy needs of 1.75 million households. Experts estimate that this will save 1.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas and reduce harmful emissions by 2 million tons.
By 2030, Uzbekistan plans to build ten major wind farms with a combined capacity of 10.3 gigawatts, backed by $11 billion in foreign direct investment. Once operational, these facilities will produce 35 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually.
