(+28%) Exports to Belarus • Jan-Dec 2021/20

In 2021, the volume of furniture exports from Russia to Belarus reached 80.8 million USD. This represents a 28.2% increase to the corresponding period of the previous year. This gross estimation also includes parts of furniture, mattresses, bedding, mattress supports, healthcare and other professional furniture, so the HS codes 9401, 9402, 9403, 9404 are considered.

The share of Belarus in Russian furniture exports is as much as 12.05% in 2021, which is lower than in 2019 (12.07%) and 2020 (13.42%).

Furniture exports to Belarus consist mainly of

  • parts (14.8%), with metal parts being the top product group here,
  • metal furniture excluding beds or professional furniture (10%),
  • swivel chairs with variable height adjustment excluding medical, surgical, dental, or veterinary (8.5%),
  • seats of a kind used for motor vehicles (8%),
  • wooden furniture for dining and living rooms, priced up to 1.8 EUR per kilo (6.3%),
  • seating furniture convertible into a bed (6.1%),
  • other wooden furniture excluding for offices, kitchens, bedrooms or seats, priced higher than 1.8 EUR per kilo (5.2%),
  • wooden furniture for bedrooms, priced higher than 1.8 EUR per kilo (5.1%),
  • other parts of seating furniture (3.6%),
  • upholstered seating furniture with metal frames excluding swivel chairs (3.5%),
  • other articles of bedding and similar furnishing (3.3%),
  • and wooden furniture for dining and living rooms, priced higher than 1.8 EUR per kilo (3.0%).

These categories together provide more than 77% of the total value of furniture exported to this country. Each other furniture category accounts for 2% or less.

The growth in 2021 was mainly driven by

  • swivel chairs with variable height adjustment excluding medical, surgical, dental, or veterinary (+67%),
  • seats of a kind used for motor vehicles (+182%),
  • other parts of seating furniture (+86%),
  • upholstered seating furniture with metal frames excluding swivel chairs (+98%).

Some smaller scale categories also showed a higher than average increase, for instance:

  • upholstered seating furniture with wooden frames (+38%),
  • wooden furniture for bedrooms, priced up to 1.8 EUR per kilo (+30%),
  • spring mattresses (+33%).

The average price for furniture exported to this country is growing. In 2021, the average price declared at customs reached 2.33 USD per kilo (previously 1.83 USD in 2019 and 1.61 USD in 2020). This growth goes hand in hand with general annual increase of the average price for Russian furniture exports.

The weighted average of the currency exchange rate was 73.6541 RUB for 1 USD in the current period under review. This rate shall be used to accurately convert the exported value to rubles.

The exports data provided here is a preliminary estimation made by the Russian Federal Customs Service immediately after the reporting period, available at the time this news item is being published. Evidently, numbers are subject to change: the Customs update their analytics retrospectively, even a long time after the reporting period is finished.
