Uzbekistan has successfully brought its latest renewable energy asset online, with the Zarchob-3 small hydroelectric power station now feeding clean electricity into the national grid. The 16-megawatt facility, strategically positioned on the Tupalang River in the Sariasiysky district of Surkhandarya region, represents another milestone in the country’s ambitious energy transformation journey.
The new power station demonstrates impressive operational capabilities, generating 70 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually — enough energy to power approximately 23,000 households while simultaneously delivering substantial environmental benefits. The facility’s operation will eliminate over 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year and create annual savings of roughly 19 million cubic meters of natural gas.
Strategic energy expansion program
Zarchob-3 forms a crucial component of Uzbekgidroenergo’s comprehensive program focused on optimizing water resource utilization and systematically increasing the renewable energy share in the country’s power mix. The project showcases the effectiveness of domestic technical capabilities, having been executed primarily using local resources and expertise from Uzbekgidroenergo.
The construction timeline reflects remarkable efficiency in infrastructure development. Following President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Surkhandarya region on November 17, 2023, the project moved from initiation to completion in less than eighteen months, spanning 2024-2025. This rapid execution demonstrates the country’s growing capacity for swift implementation of strategic infrastructure projects.
Cascading energy generation system
The Zarchob-3 station completes an innovative cascade system on the Tupalang River, joining the previously operational Zarchob-1 (37 MW) and Zarchob-2 (38 MW) facilities. This cascading approach maximizes the energy potential of a single water source, creating a highly efficient renewable energy generation network that exemplifies smart resource management in the region.
This infrastructure development holds significant value for international companies in construction, manufacturing, and interior industries considering Uzbekistan as an investment destination. Reliable and expanding renewable energy capacity creates a more stable operational environment for energy-intensive manufacturing processes, while demonstrating the government’s commitment to sustainable industrial development. The rapid project execution and use of domestic resources also signals strong local technical capabilities and supply chain reliability — critical factors for international partners in furniture manufacturing, construction materials production, and interior design industries looking to establish or expand operations in Central Asia’s largest market.
