European Union reaffirms growing interest in Central Asia

On August 1, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell arrived in Kazakhstan for a two-day visit. In meetings with Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, discussions included the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).

Speaking at a press briefing in Astana, Borrell noted that this was his second visit to Kazakhstan in his current role. “With my term as EU representative ending in three months, it was very important for me to come here and reaffirm the European Union’s strong interest and commitment to strengthening cooperation with Central Asia as a whole and Kazakhstan in particular,” he stated.

Borrell highlighted Kazakhstan’s strategic position as a bridge between Europe and Asia and praised the political and economic reforms led by President Tokayev.

His visit comes as preparations are underway for the EU-Central Asia summit.
