Where material prototypes meet practical interior applications

12-15 Jan 2027 • Heimtextil

Heimtextil will present the new Functional Futures Lab from 12 to 15 January 2027 in Frankfurt am Main, placing performance materials and their development stages at the centre of its programme. Curated by Future Fabrics Expo, the special showcase will examine how material innovation, functional performance and design interact, covering applications ranging from temperature regulation and acoustic comfort to flame protection and healthier indoor environments.

The exhibition will bring together visionary prototypes and solutions that are already commercially available. By identifying the respective stage of development, the showcase is intended to give trade visitors a clearer basis for assessing potential applications in architecture, interior design and hospitality. The presentation will also address how materials can respond to changing requirements in living and working spaces, while supporting well-being, durability and flexible use.

“Performance is a key topic for the future of the textile industry. We see this worldwide at our events, from apparel to home and contract textiles. Together with Future Fabrics Expo, we showcase at Heimtextil what innovative materials will be capable of in the future. The Functional Futures Lab connects early-stage developments with solutions that are already available and highlights new potential applications for architecture, interior design and hospitality,” says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt.

Future Fabrics Expo is contributing expertise in material innovation and sustainability, supported by an international network spanning material development, design and research. “We are delighted to partner with Heimtextil January 2027 to elevate the conversation around the future of home and interior textiles. This partnership will connect inspiration with actionable solutions and help shape a future focused, forward-looking, responsible industry,” explains Amanda Johnston, Chief Design Officer, Future Fabrics Expo.

Orientation for tomorrow’s material decisions

The Functional Futures Lab will show materials ranging from experimental prototypes to products ready for the market. Information accompanying the exhibits will outline their functional properties and stages of development according to Technology Readiness Levels. This structure is designed to help professionals assess opportunities at an early stage and gather ideas for material selection, product development and longer-term planning.

Professionals from architecture, interior design and hospitality will be able to explore potential uses for their own projects. The showcase will therefore combine product orientation with knowledge transfer, while extending Heimtextil’s role as a platform for emerging material developments and interior solutions.

New materials – from living roots to bio-based composites

Three colour-coded thematic areas will structure the exhibition: Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance. The sections categorise the exhibits according to material origin, processing methods and conceptual approaches. Key properties addressed include temperature responsiveness, durability, flame resistance and antibacterial effects, while circularity and fundamental sustainability criteria guide the selection.

Among the exhibits will be upholstery materials made from untreated wool fibres and living root systems. These materials are designed to provide flame protection without toxic chemicals. The showcase will also include durable bio-based composites, as well as dyes derived from food waste for use with textiles and wood.

Located in Hall 4.1, the Functional Futures Lab will form the centrepiece of Interior.Architecture.Hospitality. The area will combine material presentations with opportunities for professional exchange. At the Talk Spot, experts will share insights on stage, while a café will provide space for conversations and new contacts. The area will also serve as the starting point for guided tours during Heimtextil.
