Uzbekistan launches major stadium construction project in New Tashkent amid infrastructure expansion

Construction has officially begun on a large-capacity football stadium in New Tashkent, signaling Uzbekistan’s intensifying investment in sports infrastructure and urban development. The project, valued at $100 million, will deliver a 55,000-seat venue engineered to FIFA international standards and positioned to become one of Asia’s most technologically advanced sporting facilities.

The ceremonial groundbreaking took place in November, with government officials emphasizing the stadium’s strategic role in preparing Uzbekistan to co-host the FIFA U-20 World Championship in 2027 alongside Azerbaijan. Under FIFA requirements, the venue must accommodate finals and semi-final matches, necessitating a minimum capacity that this project exceeds.

Modernization trajectory

The stadium initiative reflects broader transformation of Uzbekistan’s football infrastructure. Over the past five years, the country has undertaken substantial sector reforms, expanding its stadium network to 75 large-scale facilities and 302 mini-stadiums distributed across regional areas. The expansion is particularly striking when compared to 2017, when only three venues in the country met FIFA and AFC technical standards — that figure has now surpassed ten.

Complementing this expansion, the National Football Center recently opened in the Yukrichirchik district, establishing a specialized training ecosystem. More than 65,000 young athletes now participate in structured football programs, supported by international coaching staff and sports medicine specialists recruited from leading foreign professional clubs.

Design and sustainability principles

The New Tashkent stadium embodies the master development concept that prioritizes integration with natural landscapes and implementation of sustainable technologies. According to project specifications, the venue will be constructed on principles of green energy utilization and smart city management systems, ensuring environmental compatibility within the broader urban framework. The stadium “will be constructed in accordance with all FIFA requirements and will become one of the largest and most technologically advanced football facilities in Asia,” with design officials noting that the facility will serve as a long-term catalyst for Uzbek football and youth sports development.

Emerging talent and international presence

The infrastructure expansion correlates with improved player development outcomes. Twenty Uzbek footballers currently compete in prestigious foreign clubs with combined transfer valuations exceeding $60 million, indicating an emerging pipeline of international-caliber talent. This development reflects years of systematic youth recruitment and training improvements.

During a recent visit to Uzbekistan, FIFA President Gianni Infantino publicly acknowledged the nation’s football advancement trajectory, characterizing the country as an emerging major player within Asian football structures.

Broader infrastructure initiatives

Championship hosting preparations have prompted the government to develop a comprehensive state program addressing infrastructure modernization, transport connectivity, hospitality service capacity, medical facilities, and volunteer coordination mechanisms. These supporting initiatives represent significant commercial and development opportunities extending well beyond the stadium itself.

For international companies operating within construction, architectural design, urban development, hospitality infrastructure, and smart city solutions, the New Tashkent stadium project and its supporting development program represent tangible engagement opportunities in Central Asia’s largest metropolitan market. The convergence of major sporting event preparation, sustainable urban development principles, and substantial capital investment creates demand for specialized international expertise — from stadium technology and construction management to hospitality services and urban infrastructure systems. Organizations with capabilities in these domains will find a receptive market as Uzbekistan positions itself as a regional sports and business hub.
