South Korea and Uzbekistan build a skilled workforce pipeline around Urgench airport reconstruction

Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea are preparing a new workforce development partnership for construction projects, combining professional training, Korean-language studies and occupational safety programmes aligned with Korean requirements.

After completing the programme, participants will be able to gain practical experience at BOMI construction sites in Uzbekistan, learn to apply modern technologies and become familiar with international operating standards. The longer-term plan is to create opportunities for qualified specialists to enter the labour market of the Republic of Korea.

Training platform planned in Urgench

The first major area of cooperation is expected to be the reconstruction of Urgench International Airport. According to the company, the project will require around 1,500 workers. To support this demand, the parties discussed establishing a training and production platform in Urgench where personnel could develop the practical skills needed for the project.

The sides formalised the arrangement by signing a memorandum of understanding. The initiative links infrastructure development with a structured pipeline of trained construction specialists, while also opening a potential route for Uzbek workers to gain experience in South Korea.

For international companies in construction, engineering, interior and exterior manufacturing, architecture and related supply chains, the partnership signals a developing model for entering Uzbekistan through major infrastructure projects and local skills development. A dedicated training base could help foreign contractors address labour shortages, transfer technical standards and build a more reliable workforce for airport, transport and urban development projects.
