China powers Uzbekistan solar expansion through Sarimay renewable project

China’s Trinasolar has taken a visible role in Uzbekistan’s energy transition, supplying more than 184,000 high performance solar modules for the newly commissioned Sarimay solar power plant in the Khorezm region — a flagship project that is already feeding renewable electricity into the country’s unified energy system.

Sarimay solar plant becomes a new pillar of Uzbekistan energy mix

The Sarimay solar power plant has an installed capacity of 126 megawatts and occupies around 180 hectares, making it one of the most substantial renewable assets in Uzbekistan’s rapidly evolving energy portfolio. The facility connects to the national grid via a dedicated three kilometre transmission line, delivering electricity directly to JSC National Electric Grids of Uzbekistan and strengthening supply for homes, businesses and industrial consumers.

Construction of Sarimay began in May 2024, with the first megawatt hours supplied to the grid as early as November 2025 — even before commissioning works were fully completed. This accelerated timeline underscores how quickly Uzbekistan is moving from project planning to operational assets, reducing pressure on the conventional power fleet and laying the groundwork for more stable power for manufacturing and construction activities.

Once operating at full capacity, Sarimay is expected to generate approximately 252 gigawatt hours of clean electricity per year, enough to cover the needs of around 60,000 residents. By replacing fossil fuel based generation, the plant is projected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 140,000 tonnes annually, directly supporting Uzbekistan’s long term decarbonisation and energy diversification agenda.

The project illustrates how individual large scale solar plants are helping Uzbekistan progress toward its national target to raise the share of renewable sources in electricity production to 40 percent by 2030. For international investors, it signals that the country is not only setting ambitious goals but also commissioning sizeable assets on the ground, with clear timelines and grid integration.

Advanced Chinese technology tailored to Central Asian climate

At the heart of Sarimay are Trinasolar’s Vertex N modules with a capacity of 695 watts each. These modules use n type solar cells based on i TOPCon technology and a bifacial, dual glass construction that allows both sides of the module to generate electricity. For Uzbekistan’s dry continental climate — characterised by hot summers, sharp seasonal temperature shifts and abundant sand and dust — this combination is designed to maximise output while preserving long term reliability.

Key performance parameters, such as a low temperature coefficient and proven resistance to sand exposure and potential induced degradation, are critical for desert and semi desert sites. In practice, they mean lower power losses in extreme heat and greater resilience over decades of operation, which is vital for project economics and for grid planners counting on stable capacity.

The output of the modules is backed by a 30 year guarantee, exceeding the planned 25 year operational life of the Sarimay project. This long horizon provides additional confidence not only to the plant’s owner and lenders but also to downstream commercial and industrial consumers that rely on predictable, long term access to electricity for their own investment decisions.

“The Sarimay project shows how Uzbekistan’s plans to develop renewable energy are turning into working facilities. For a plant of this scale, the characteristics of the modules affect the efficiency of the entire system. High power, bifacial generation and long term reliability help the power plant operate stably for decades,” said Elva Wang, Head of Trinasolar’s group for Southeast, South and Central Asia. “We are proud that Vertex N modules are used in this project and will continue to work with partners to develop large scale solar energy in Uzbekistan and Central Asia.”

Uzbekistan strengthens its macroregional appeal for industrial investors

For Central Asia, Sarimay is more than an energy project — it is another anchor in a broader shift toward modern, grid connected renewable infrastructure that can support new industrial clusters, logistics hubs and construction programmes. As solar and wind capacity scale up, Uzbekistan gains more flexibility to support power intensive manufacturing, from building materials and home appliances to wood processing and furniture production, without overburdening legacy thermal assets.

Reliable and increasingly green electricity is becoming a key competitive factor for cities and regions seeking to attract foreign capital into industrial parks, warehousing complexes and hospitality projects. Developers and operators of logistics centres, shopping and interior showrooms, hotels and resort facilities can assess Uzbekistan’s growing renewable backbone as a way to lower operating risks, optimise long term energy costs and improve the environmental profile of their assets.

For public authorities, the commissioning of Sarimay demonstrates the ability to coordinate major international technology suppliers with national grid operators and regulatory bodies. Successful delivery of such projects builds confidence in permitting procedures, grid connection rules and long term power purchase frameworks — elements that international investors monitor closely when deciding whether to enter or expand in a market.
