Belgium and Kazakhstan use royal visit to expand trade and investment ties

Belgium is using the first state visit by its monarchs to Central Asia as a platform for expanding trade, investment and business cooperation with Kazakhstan. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde arrived in Astana on October 12 for a visit that continued until October 14, accompanied by a delegation representing the Belgian government, business community, universities and media.

Business agenda takes centre stage

The programme included high-level negotiations, the fourth meeting of the Kazakhstan – Belgium Business Council and a forum bringing together university rectors from both countries. Events were held in Astana and Almaty, with the two sides expected to adopt a joint statement and sign bilateral documents.

Trade and investment were among the central priorities. Bilateral trade increased from €220 million in 2016 to €765 million in 2025, indicating a substantial expansion of commercial ties over the past decade. More than 100 Belgian companies currently operate in Kazakhstan, while transport and logistics, critical minerals and renewable energy have been identified as additional areas with potential for cooperation.

A European gateway for Kazakhstan

For Kazakhstan, closer relations with Belgium offer an opportunity to attract more European capital and technology, broaden external trade links and strengthen connections with the European Union. Astana is seeking to position the country as an independent and reliable partner for European businesses while developing new channels for investment and cross-border commerce.

For international companies in furniture, construction, interior and exterior manufacturing, trade, design and architecture, the visit is relevant because stronger Belgium – Kazakhstan relations could improve access to business networks, investment partnerships and logistics channels between Central Asia and Europe. The expanding trade relationship and the involvement of Belgian companies provide a foundation for exploring the Kazakh market, although prospective investors will still need to assess sector-specific regulations, financing conditions and the practical reliability of transport links.
