World Bank expands partnership with Uzbekistan for infrastructure modernization and tourism development

Uzbekistan has solidified its position as one of the World Bank’s most dynamic partners in Central Asia, with their collaborative portfolio now surpassing $14 billion in active projects. The strategic alliance has reached new heights with ambitious plans for infrastructure modernization, tourism expansion, and comprehensive job creation programs targeting women and youth across the nation.

The partnership has evolved into a comprehensive development framework that addresses multiple economic sectors simultaneously. Under the World Bank’s technical guidance, Uzbekistan has successfully implemented advanced poverty measurement methodologies and continues conducting detailed diagnostics of poverty and equality indicators throughout the country. This systematic approach provides crucial data foundation for evidence-based policy making and targeted interventions.

Infrastructure and tourism acceleration

The centerpiece of the expanded collaboration involves a major joint initiative under the “From Poverty to Prosperity” program. This comprehensive project encompasses practical measures for employment generation specifically designed for women and young professionals, alongside extensive modernization of social infrastructure in both urban centers and rural communities. The tourism development component represents a significant opportunity for international hospitality and construction companies seeking market entry points.

Private sector advancement has emerged as a priority focus area, with dedicated support mechanisms for medium-term development programs and strategic planning initiatives. The collaboration also extends to technical assistance for the upcoming national population census, which will provide critical demographic data for business planning and market analysis.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev received World Bank Global Director Luis Felipe Lopez-Calva on September 17 in Namangan, where the high-level discussions took place during the international forum “From Poverty to Prosperity.” Lopez-Calva conveyed greetings from World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and acknowledged the successful organization of the international forum.

This enhanced World Bank partnership creates substantial opportunities for international companies in construction, interior design, and hospitality sectors. The infrastructure modernization projects will require extensive expertise in building technologies, urban planning, and sustainable construction solutions. Tourism development initiatives open doors for hotel chains, leisure facility developers, and architectural firms specializing in hospitality design. The focus on job creation and skills development also presents opportunities for companies offering training programs, manufacturing equipment, and workplace solutions tailored to emerging markets.
