Uzbekistan to construct largest aviation hub in Urtachirchik district with railway connection

Uzbekistan is embarking on an ambitious infrastructure transformation that promises to reshape its position as a regional aviation gateway. The country has officially announced plans to construct its largest aviation hub in the Urtachirchik district of Tashkent region, marking a significant leap in the nation’s transport modernization strategy.

The massive project, unveiled by regional governor Zoyir Mirzayev during an administrative meeting on August 11, will span an impressive 1,200 hectares of strategically selected territory. This new aviation complex is positioned to become the crown jewel of Central Asia’s transport infrastructure, capable of handling up to 20 million passengers annually in its initial phase while accommodating 169 aircraft simultaneously and managing over 40 takeoffs and landings per hour.

Strategic location and connectivity vision

The site selection demonstrates sophisticated logistical planning, with the new airport positioned just 17 kilometers south of the existing Tashkent airport. Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov emphasized that the location capitalizes on proximity to critical infrastructure networks, including the M-39 highway and the forthcoming toll road connecting Tashkent to Samarkand.

Perhaps most intriguingly, the aviation hub will be supported by an entirely new railway network spanning over 100 kilometers. This rail connection, scheduled for construction beginning in 2026, will create an integrated transport corridor linking Bekabad city, along with Bekabad, Buka, and Pskent districts, through Nurafshan directly to Tashkent. This multi-modal approach promises to transform regional accessibility and cargo movement capabilities.

Technology-driven development approach

Uzbekistan Airports Chairman Javlonbek Umarkhodjayev revealed that the complex will be completely digitalized and constructed using cutting-edge technologies. This commitment to technological advancement signals the country’s determination to create a world-class facility that can compete with leading international aviation hubs.

The project timeline targets completion by 2030, with authorities currently evaluating investor proposals to finance and execute this transformative infrastructure development.

This aviation hub development presents significant opportunities for international companies operating in construction, logistics, and manufacturing sectors. The project’s scale and technological ambitions will create substantial demand for advanced construction materials, modern building technologies, and sophisticated logistics equipment. Companies specializing in airport infrastructure, digital systems integration, and transport connectivity solutions will find considerable business prospects in this undertaking. The complementary railway project further expands opportunities for rail technology providers and cargo handling systems manufacturers. Moreover, the enhanced connectivity will improve market access for international businesses seeking to establish manufacturing or distribution operations in Uzbekistan, offering improved links to both domestic and regional markets across Central Asia.
