Uzbekistan’s Surkhandarya region is embarking on an ambitious eco-tourism venture that promises to transform the scenic South Surkhan reservoir into a premier hospitality destination. The regional administration has unveiled plans for a comprehensive eco-tourism complex that will span 15.7 hectares along the reservoir’s shoreline in Kumkurgan district, representing a significant investment of 140 billion sums in the country’s tourism infrastructure.
Regional governor Ulugbek Kosimov personally reviewed the enhanced project presentation and conducted an on-site inspection of the designated area. The ambitious development will feature a distinctive semi-circular waterfront promenade dotted with modern buildings equipped with solar panels, creating a harmonious blend of sustainability and contemporary design. The complex will accommodate cottages, swimming pools, parking facilities, retail outlets, dining establishments, and various service points, alongside floating pavilions positioned directly over the water.
The project places environmental stewardship at its core, incorporating comprehensive wastewater treatment systems, extensive green landscaping initiatives, and eco-friendly road construction standards. Recreational amenities will include sports facilities, children’s playgrounds, pedestrian walkways, and organized fishing areas. The development also envisions yacht and boat services, fountains, tree-lined promenades, and dedicated parking for both private vehicles and tour buses.
Construction will proceed in carefully planned phases, with regional leadership emphasizing the need for systematic implementation that meets all established environmental and construction requirements. The South Surkhan reservoir, operational since 1967 and situated 408 meters above sea level, covers 65 square kilometers of water surface with a capacity of 800 million cubic meters, providing an ideal natural setting for this tourism venture.
