Uzbekistan advances infrastructure and construction development in Jizzakh region with major transport and urban renewal projects

Uzbekistan is making significant strides in transforming its Jizzakh region into a modern logistics and industrial hub through an ambitious combination of transport infrastructure, energy projects, and urban development initiatives. The country is investing heavily in connectivity, construction, and specialized infrastructure that promises to reshape the region’s business landscape and unlock new opportunities for both local and international stakeholders.

Breakthrough in transport connectivity

A critical piece of this transformation is a newly completed transport corridor linking Jizzakh city directly to the M–39 international highway. The investment of nearly 290 billion sums has delivered a modern 700–meter overpass and a 4–kilometer connecting road, fundamentally reshaping logistics efficiency for the region. The new road infrastructure is engineered to handle more than 14,000 vehicles daily, substantially reducing travel time and operational costs for businesses.

Previously, users of the road network faced a 25–kilometer detour to access or exit the city. The new direct connection cuts this to just 4 kilometers. This dramatic reduction eliminates congestion bottlenecks that have long plagued the old route and directly benefits transport operators, logistics companies, and service providers by cutting travel time, fuel consumption, and wear on vehicles.

The overpass itself represents a leap in engineering durability. Built using modern metallurgical construction technology, it is designed for 100 years of operation — double the typical 50–year lifespan of traditional reinforced concrete structures. Equally important, the new infrastructure eliminates the need to halt vehicle traffic when passenger or freight trains pass, smoothing the flow of goods and emergency services alike.

Energy infrastructure expansion

Complementing the transport developments is an integrated atomic power station under construction in the region, featuring two small reactors and two larger units. Current work focuses on excavation of reactor building foundations and preparation of the construction site, including land leveling, concrete work, and reinforcement installation. The project includes temporary housing facilities for the construction workforce.

Supporting this major energy project are plans to localize production of construction materials needed for the station and to expand technical training capacity in regional universities. These measures aim to build domestic supply chains and develop a skilled workforce capable of supporting both construction and eventual operation phases.

Urban renovation and residential construction

Jizzakh is also undergoing a comprehensive urban renewal program focused on its gateway areas. The renovation plan calls for replacing aging residential stock with modern, safe, and comfortable housing. The city is simultaneously developing new purpose-built facilities including an IT center and crafts center, alongside reconstruction of district complexes and streetscape improvements in high-traffic areas.

The region is planning a specialized monotown for atomic station specialists and their families, situated 16 kilometers from the plant. Designed to accommodate 10,000 residents, the settlement will include complete infrastructure, social facilities, and service amenities — a significant construction undertaking in itself.

Strategic context and forward direction

These developments reflect Uzbekistan’s strategic effort to unlock growth potential in Jizzakh beyond its existing industrial base. Regional officials note that while the territory has demonstrated positive momentum in recent years, its full capabilities remain underutilized. The convergence of improved logistics infrastructure, energy security, construction activity, and urban development creates conditions for accelerated economic diversification.

Relevance for international business

For international companies in construction, logistics, manufacturing, and services, these developments are particularly significant. The improved transport corridor and capacity to handle high traffic volumes directly reduce supply chain friction and operational costs. The urban renewal programs create demand for building materials, interior finishes, and construction services. The energy infrastructure expansion and workforce development initiatives signal that Uzbekistan is committed to building sustainable industrial capacity, which supports the investment climate for manufacturing and processing industries seeking stable, low-cost power supplies and skilled labor. The combination of modernized transport links, expanding construction pipelines, and focus on economic diversification makes Jizzakh an increasingly attractive destination for companies seeking to establish or expand operations within Central Asia’s largest economy.
