UN Tourism honors Uzbekistan for innovative sustainable village development project

Uzbekistan has captured international attention in the tourism sector after securing a prestigious UN Tourism special award for its groundbreaking approach to rural destination development. The recognition came during the Tourism EXPO Japan-2025, where the country’s Tourism Committee was honored for its “Tourist Villages — Sustainable Tourism Development” project, marking a significant milestone in Central Asia’s tourism evolution.

The award specifically recognizes projects that demonstrate exceptional innovation while meeting strict criteria for corporate and regional social responsibility, as outlined in the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. Uzbekistan’s initiative stood out for its comprehensive approach to preserving local ecosystems, cultural traditions, and community heritage while simultaneously creating economic opportunities through strategic public-private partnerships.

The project’s core strategy revolves around transforming rural areas into attractive tourism destinations without compromising their authentic character. By focusing on sustainable development principles, the initiative aims to generate employment opportunities, stimulate regional economic growth, and establish long-term tourism infrastructure that benefits local communities directly.

Adding weight to this achievement is the previous international recognition of Uzbekistan’s “Sentob” tourist village, which UN Tourism declared the world’s best tourist village in 2023. During the recent award ceremony, this flagship project was once again highlighted as an exemplary model, with UN Tourism officials recommending it to other nations as a blueprint for successful rural tourism development.

This international recognition signals Uzbekistan’s growing prominence as a tourism innovation hub in Central Asia, potentially opening new avenues for international collaboration and investment in the region’s hospitality infrastructure. For companies operating in furniture, interior design, construction, and hospitality sectors, Uzbekistan’s expanding tourist village network represents emerging opportunities in rural accommodation development, authentic furnishing solutions, and specialized construction projects that blend modern comfort with traditional aesthetics. The country’s commitment to sustainable tourism development also creates demand for eco-friendly building materials, locally-inspired interior design concepts, and innovative hospitality infrastructure that supports both international standards and cultural preservation.
