South Korea advances high-speed rail project in Uzbekistan with detailed delivery timeline

South Korean rail giant Hyundai Rotem has provided crucial updates on its ambitious high-speed train delivery project to Uzbekistan, marking a significant milestone in the Central Asian nation’s transport modernization efforts. Deputy Minister of Transport Jasurbek Choriyev met with Hyundai Rotem’s senior leadership team, including vice-presidents Kwag Chol Hun and Lee Wonsang, to review progress on the landmark $195.7 million contract.

Manufacturing Timeline and Technical Specifications

The Korean delegation presented detailed information about current production processes and delivery schedules for six high-speed electric trains comprising 42 carriages in total. These sophisticated rail units, branded as “Jaloliddin Manguberdi” trains, will transform passenger transport along the strategic Tashkent – Urgench – Khiva corridor, connecting Uzbekistan’s capital with key western regions.

The comprehensive agreement, originally signed during South Korean President’s state visit to Uzbekistan in June 2024, encompasses not only train delivery but also extensive technical maintenance and repair services. This full-service approach demonstrates Hyundai Rotem’s commitment to long-term operational support in the Uzbek market.

Localization and Technology Transfer Opportunities

Beyond immediate delivery commitments, discussions revealed promising prospects for manufacturing localization within Uzbekistan. The parties explored potential joint ventures in railway machine building, technology transfer initiatives, and comprehensive staff training programs. These conversations signal Hyundai Rotem’s strategic interest in establishing deeper manufacturing roots in the Central Asian market.

The development of local service infrastructure emerged as another key discussion point, suggesting opportunities for creating specialized maintenance facilities and technical support centers. Such investments would represent a significant expansion of South Korean industrial presence in Uzbekistan’s transport sector.

This rail modernization initiative offers substantial opportunities for international companies in construction, interior manufacturing, and transportation design sectors. The project’s scale — involving sophisticated train interiors, station infrastructure upgrades, and maintenance facilities — creates demand for specialized materials, components, and design services. Moreover, Hyundai Rotem’s interest in localization suggests potential partnerships for suppliers and manufacturers looking to establish operations in Uzbekistan’s growing transport infrastructure market.
