Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan sign new alliance agreement to strengthen bilateral cooperation

On August 23, Presidents Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan and Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan signed an Alliance Agreement, marking a significant step in the development of relations between the two nations. The signing ceremony took place in Tashkent.

President Mirziyoyev highlighted that, within just a few years, Uzbekistan-Azerbaijan relations have reached the highest level of intergovernmental cooperation.

During Aliyev’s visit, the first meeting of the High Intergovernmental Council was held, resulting in the signing of several key documents. These included an Action Plan to expand trade, economic, and investment cooperation, a Tourism Action Plan for 2024-2026, and agreements on cultural, humanitarian, and educational collaboration.

The two leaders also discussed the upcoming 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan, to be celebrated next year. In preparation, they agreed to develop a Program of Events and a Schedule of intensive interdepartmental contacts and exchanges. The presidents set goals to increase bilateral trade and industrial cooperation, including joint projects in third countries.

Ahead of the visit, an Uzbekistan-Azerbaijan business forum was held in Tashkent, where agreements worth over $2 billion were signed. Additionally, the two countries agreed to increase the frequency of flights and simplify ground and air transport procedures to further enhance connectivity.
