On September 19, the first train set off along the new China – Kyrgyzstan – Uzbekistan – Afghanistan transport corridor. This first train includes twelve 40-foot containers.
Cargo transportation along the multimodal corridor is carried out from the Kashgar railway station (China) to the Osh railway station (Kyrgyzstan) by road, and then to the Mazar-i-Sharif station (Afghanistan) through Uzbekistan by rail. According to rough estimates, only in the direction of Afghanistan along this multimodal route, the volume of cargo transportation will be more than 4 thousand containers per year.
In addition, Pakistan and Uzbekistan have been working together for several years on the Trans-Afghan Railway project. The project, put on pause with the change of power in Afghanistan, returned to the agenda in early 2022. In the case of its implementation, freight transportation between Central Asia and South Asia will be significantly cheaper.
