Asian workplace design platform showcases transformation toward human-centered offices

Post-show report • ORGATEC TOKYO 2025

ORGATEC TOKYO 2025 concluded its fourth edition with notable growth, welcoming approximately 160 brands and just over 45,000 visitors at Tokyo Big Sight’s South Halls 1-4. The three-day event, held from June 3-5, demonstrated increased attendance compared to the previous edition, reinforcing its position as Asia’s key platform for workplace design innovation.

Building upon the ongoing “SHIFT DESIGN” theme, this year introduced the conceptual axis “BORDERLESS – Office, My Way,” exploring how office spaces can evolve to embrace personal identities while offering compelling reasons for employees to choose them over remote work alternatives. The exhibition emphasized the integration of residential comfort into professional environments, creating workplaces that function as “places you want to be.”

Enhanced venue experience and industry recognition

The venue layout utilized both upper and lower floors to improve visitor circulation, with the upper floor featuring dimmed lighting that allowed individual booth designs to create distinct atmospheres. This approach, incorporating staging techniques from the Cologne event, generated considerable attention and delivered a multisensory experience.

Koji Minato, President & Representative Director of ITOKI CORPORATION, observed: “At this year’s ORGATEC TOKYO, I saw many fashionably dressed visitors. Their presence felt symbolic of the growing importance of design in the creation of offices. It was also striking to see an increase in exhibitors from a wide range of backgrounds, not limited to only traditional office furniture manufacturers.”

Awards celebrate innovative stand design

The ORGATEC TOKYO Awards recognized excellence in spatial design and craftsmanship, with KOKUYO claiming both the Grand Prize and Best Stand Design Award: Chosen by Exhibitors. Their minimalist approach showcasing a single chair demonstrated clarity and dramatic integration of space and product. OKAMURA, PLUS, and HIDA received Second Prize recognition, while ten companies earned Special Recognition Awards for transformation-focused presentations.

Taro Kiguma, Editor-in-Chief of ELLE DECOR Japan and awards judge, commented: “You could look at any booth and feel the exhibitor’s passion and sincerity towards craftsmanship, so evaluation was extremely difficult. From updated versions of traditional office furniture to new materials and wooden furniture you’d want to use in your living room, I was once again reminded that the opportunity to encounter unique and innovative ideas is what makes ORGATEC TOKYO so appealing.”

Industry dialogue and future outlook

The Xperience Area hosted seminars featuring speakers from spatial and architectural practice, including presentations on office wellbeing by NARUSE・INOKUMA ARCHITECTS and Silicon Valley’s influence on corporate campus design by London-based architectural scholar Dr Claude Dutson.

Masayuki Nakamura, Chairman of the Japan Office and Institutional Furniture Association, noted: “ORGATEC TOKYO has truly become Asia’s leading trade fair for office furniture and workplaces, both in name and substance. Furthermore, Koelnmesse and JOIFA have just confirmed that ORGATEC TOKYO will continue to be held all the way until 2031.”

The next edition is scheduled for June 2-4, 2026 at Tokyo Big Sight, South Halls 1-4.
