Exploring tomorrow: the top themes of light and building services technology

8-13 Mar 2026 • Light + Building

From 8 to 13 March 2026, Light + Building in Frankfurt am Main will present three key themes that frame the future of lighting and building services technology: Sustainable Transformation, Smart Connectivity, and Living Light. These topics reflect the current and emerging trends driven by digitalisation, urbanisation, and climate goals impacting architecture and building practices worldwide.

As the leading global trade fair in the sector, Light + Building offers a dynamic platform where architecture and technology converge. It emphasizes practical and innovative solutions for climate-friendly energy systems, digital building management, and the intelligent use of light to enhance wellbeing and spatial design. Steffen Larbig, Director Brand Management for Light + Building, commented, “We use them to focus attention on the developments shaping the lighting and building technology sectors today – and which will be essential tomorrow.”

Sustainable transformation

This theme addresses the integration of architecture, technology, and infrastructure to achieve energy-efficient buildings aligned with climate targets. The fair will highlight intelligent energy management, renewable heat integration, energy storage, and smart grid interaction. Additionally, e-charging infrastructure and ecosystems will be explored, prioritizing planning, load management, and lighting design. Urban development solutions linking energy, mobility, and design will complete this focus area.

Smart connectivity

As buildings evolve into digitally interconnected systems, the Smart Connectivity theme will showcase technologies that increase efficiency in planning, operation, and usage. Highlights include smart building infrastructures, IoT and AI applications in building management, software solutions, BIM, digital twins, and cybersecurity. System integration and predictive maintenance underline sustainable, resilient building operations throughout their lifecycle.

Living light

Living Light focuses on the multifaceted role of light beyond illumination: shaping atmosphere, supporting functionality, and influencing human wellbeing. The theme presents adaptive and human-centric lighting systems tailored to time, space, and user needs to enhance productivity and comfort. It also covers high-quality lighting design, health-supportive lighting, public and retail lighting, and outdoor lighting concepts for gardens and pathways. Design trends, innovative materials, and lighting adapted to flexible working environments (New Work) complete this area.

Light + Building 2026 will complement these themes with a comprehensive event programme, including specialist lectures, guided tours, special presentations, and panel discussions to deepen insights and foster interdisciplinary dialogue among industry professionals.
