Uzbekistan has gained a new direct connection to the Gulf region as Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, has launched daily flights on the Abu Dhabi — Tashkent route, marking a notable expansion of international air access for Central Asia.
New direct gateway between Abu Dhabi and Tashkent
The first Airbus A320 from Abu Dhabi touched down at Tashkent International Airport in the early hours of August 10 and was welcomed with a traditional water salute, underscoring the symbolic importance of the new route for the country’s aviation sector.
The service will operate every day, providing passengers in Uzbekistan with seamless access to Etihad’s global network and opening up one-stop connections to major cities across the Persian Gulf, Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia and North America.
Uzbekistan Airports highlighted the strategic value of the launch, stating that the entry of Etihad Airways into the Uzbek market is an important event for the development of the country’s international air services. According to the company, daily direct connection with Abu Dhabi will not only develop business and tourist ties between the two countries, but will also provide passengers with convenient options for onward travel through one of the region’s largest aviation hubs.
For the UAE, the new route positions Abu Dhabi as a key gateway into Central Asia, reinforcing the emirate’s role as a regional hub for trade, tourism and investment flows, while Uzbekistan strengthens its profile as an emerging market with improving connectivity.
Impact on Central Asian business, logistics and tourism
Daily flights on the Abu Dhabi — Tashkent corridor are expected to make business travel more predictable and efficient for regional manufacturers, construction companies and service providers who increasingly work with partners in the Gulf and beyond. Short overnight connections allow executives, engineers and project managers to reach Uzbekistan with minimal transit time, facilitating site visits, contract negotiations and long-term project supervision.
From a logistics standpoint, the route enhances air cargo options for higher-value and time-sensitive goods linked to the interior, furniture, home appliances and building materials sectors. Although the Airbus A320 is primarily a passenger aircraft, belly cargo capacity on a daily service offers regular uplift for samples, spare parts and small batches of finished products destined for fast-growing Central Asian urban markets.
The hospitality and tourism industries in Uzbekistan also stand to benefit. Direct access from Abu Dhabi connects Uzbekistan more closely with the Gulf’s strong outbound tourism market, including travelers interested in cultural heritage, nature-based tourism and city breaks in Tashkent and other regional centers. This can accelerate the development of new hotels, serviced apartments and lifestyle venues catering to international guests.
At the same time, Uzbekistan’s residents gain easier routes to the Gulf’s major retail and design hubs, where many global furniture and interior brands are represented. This will likely catalyze new consumer demand patterns and encourage Uzbek retailers and developers to deepen cooperation with international suppliers.
Strategic relevance for manufacturing, construction and design companies
For international companies in furniture manufacturing, interior and exterior solutions, construction materials, home appliances and architectural design, the new Etihad route is more than a transport update. It signals a gradual strengthening of Uzbekistan’s connectivity and its openness to cross-border partnerships. Daily flights via a major Gulf hub make it easier to schedule showroom visits, participate in trade fairs, open regional offices and coordinate multi-country supply chains that include Central Asia.
This improved air bridge between the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan can support long-term investment planning by reducing travel friction and shortening response times for project-based work. As infrastructure, hospitality and urban development projects advance in Uzbekistan, companies active in furniture, construction, design and architecture gain a more reliable physical link to the market, increasing the practicality of expanding local presence and building sustainable regional partnerships.
