Design collaborations reshape Cologne as autumn hub

27-31 Oct 2026 • idd cologne

Cologne is set to strengthen its position on the international design map this autumn when idd cologne and Design Season Cologne join forces alongside ORGATEC to create a comprehensive design and interiors week at the end of October 2026. The strategic partnership aims to connect the trade fair format, the city and the creative community more closely, reinforcing Cologne as a leading European hub for design and interior culture.

The second edition of idd cologne will be staged from 27 to 31 October 2026 as an urban-only concept. Running in parallel, the new citywide festival Design Season Cologne will debut from 26 to 31 October 2026, activating multiple locations across the city. A joint programme of selected showrooms and store partners will serve as the connective tissue between the two formats, creating additional destinations for trade visitors, designers, creatives and design-interested guests.

“Cologne will become the meeting point of the European design scene in October 2026. The cooperation with Design Season Cologne emphasises the urban orientation of idd cologne and creates more visibility for interior design in the city. Showrooms and store partners are an important component of our event concept. The joint presence in the city and at the trade fair creates additional reach, synergies and real added value for all participants”, says Alexander Caspari, Senior Manager Trade Fair idd cologne.

Robin Hapelt, initiator of Design Season Cologne, adds: “The cooperation between idd cologne and Design Season Cologne stands for a new form of design presentation: more open, more diverse and more oriented to experiences. Both formats share the goal of further reinforcing Cologne as an international design city. Together, this results in a diverse platform for design that more closely links the trade fair, the city, the creative scene and international visitors with one another.”

Strategic alignment across city and trade fair

The cooperation between idd cologne and Design Season Cologne is designed to turn Cologne into a single, interconnected design landscape during the late October period. By jointly integrating selected showrooms and stores into both programmes, the partners create a network of urban experience spaces that bridge the gap between exhibition formats and the city. This alignment offers visiting professionals and design-savvy consumers a coherent route through premium interior presentations, conceptual installations and brand showcases.

With ORGATEC taking place in parallel, the combined initiatives extend the design discourse beyond the traditional fairgrounds into the urban fabric. The partnership is intended to generate long-term visibility for Cologne’s design ecosystem, ensuring that trade visitors, brands and the local creative scene benefit from shared traffic, joint communication and complementary content throughout the week.

idd cologne – premium interior design in urban space

In 2026, idd cologne will be realised entirely as an urban-only format. The event will occupy key design venues including Design Post Köln and machwerkhaus köln, supplemented by participating showrooms and stores distributed throughout the city. This setup moves the premium interior design showcase closer to where design is experienced in everyday life, offering a more immediate connection between brands, professionals and end users.

idd cologne focuses on high-quality interiors solutions, emerging trends, materials and design concepts for private living spaces. The format addresses both a professional audience and private visitors with a strong interest in design, positioning itself as a platform for residential interior expertise. With its clear emphasis on the home environment, idd cologne complements ORGATEC, which concentrates on workplace and contract solutions. Together, the events create new synergies between living, work and contract business sectors, providing a holistic view of how professional and private spaces are conceived and designed.

Design Season Cologne – citywide design festival

Design Season Cologne broadens the spectrum of content on offer during the week by adding related design disciplines, product innovations and new conceptual approaches. Organised by Thomas Fasshauer and his agency Chicos Event, the festival will activate studios, companies, designers, brands and other creatives across Cologne. Participants will present products, design concepts and innovations within several thematic “Design Districts” distributed around the city.

Beyond classic showroom presentations, Design Season Cologne will encourage brands and designers to occupy architecturally distinctive buildings, cultural institutions, temporary spaces and selected off-locations. This approach is intended to foster more experimental and experience-oriented forms of design presentation, making contemporary design visible in diverse urban contexts and inviting a wider audience to engage with current developments in interior and product design.

Opportunities for showrooms and store partners

The joint framework of idd cologne and Design Season Cologne offers participating showrooms and retail partners a range of advantages. By being integrated into both event formats, these locations gain increased reach and visibility during a period when Cologne attracts international trade visitors and design-focused consumers. The coordinated communication of the two organisers ensures that selected venues form an official part of the design and interiors week, strengthening their profile in the market.

Showrooms and stores benefit from access to additional visitor groups, from industry decision-makers to local and international design enthusiasts. At the same time, they are embedded in a curated, high-quality design environment that spans residential, workplace and experimental design presentations. Interested venues are invited to contribute actively to the city’s design programme with their own exhibitions, installations and brand experiences, helping to shape Cologne’s role as an international design destination during the autumn season.
