Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan strengthen airport modernization partnership

At the International Aviation and Logistics Forum held in Tashkent in mid-November, two of Central Asia’s premier aviation hubs — Uzbekistan Airports and Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku — agreed to deepen their collaboration on airport infrastructure modernization and strengthen regional transit connectivity.

The strategic discussion, led by Javlonbek Umarhodzhaev (Chairman of Uzbekistan Airports) and Teymur Hasanov (Director of Heydar Aliyev International Airport), focused on a shared challenge: enhancing passenger experience while building sustainable, efficient airport operations. Both parties committed to implementing energy-saving and digital technologies designed to improve safety, comfort, and environmental performance across their respective networks.

For Uzbekistan Airports, this partnership represents a direct pathway to internationally-recognized operational standards. Heydar Aliyev Airport has already secured Skytrax certification — a globally recognized quality benchmark — and agreed to share its certification expertise and best practices with Uzbek counterparts. This knowledge transfer could accelerate Uzbekistan Airports’ pursuit of similar international certifications and elevate service standards across the country’s aviation network.

As part of the practical collaboration framework, the Uzbekistan Airports delegation visited Baku to study the airport’s operational organization and infrastructure solutions, identifying models and approaches that could be adapted for deployment in Uzbekistan’s facilities.

Strengthening Central Asia’s transport corridor

Airport modernization has become integral to both countries’ transport strategies. Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan view upgraded aviation infrastructure as essential to reinforcing their positions within Central Asia’s emerging logistics and trade networks. The partnership signals confidence in the long-term sustainability of regional connectivity and economic growth, positioning both nations as pivotal hubs within the broader Middle Corridor development initiative.

Opportunities for international business

For companies operating in logistics, transport, construction, and international trade sectors, this airport cooperation signals improved air connectivity and more efficient infrastructure emerging across Central Asia. Enhanced airport operations directly translate to faster cargo handling, smoother passenger transit, and reduced logistics costs — critical factors for firms seeking to capitalize on Central Asia’s growing market opportunities.

The shared emphasis on digital technologies and sustainable infrastructure development creates tangible openings for international suppliers of aviation technology, smart terminal systems, and green building solutions. Strengthened airport infrastructure reinforces the region’s competitive appeal for regional distribution networks, manufacturing operations, and tourism development.
